Stampley Moss Farm hasn’t always been the peaceful, horse-filled place you see today. The land has a surprisingly varied past.

Historically, the site was associated with clay extraction and brickmaking, with a clay pit and brickworks once forming part of the landscape. In later years, the site also had a more busy chapter, being used as a commercial aggregate yard.

It’s quite a transformation when you look at it today.

The farm sits within the old rural landscape around Thornley and the Derwent Valley, where historic lanes, tracks and field boundaries tell their own story of how the area has changed over time. Even now, the shape and character of parts of the land offer little clues to its working past.

We became the custodians of Stampley Moss Farm in June 2021, when it became our family home. Today, instead of clay, bricks and aggregates, the farm is home to our family, horses and ponies, dogs and an abundance of wildlife.

We’ve tried to retain the character of the place while giving parts of it a new life — including our wild camping & quirky converted Horsebox, where guests can stay and experience this beautiful corner of the Derwent Valley for themselves.

We love that Stampley Moss Farm has continually evolved over the generations: from clay pits and brickmaking, through its working commercial years, to horses, wildlife and glamping today.

And now we’re simply adding the next chapter to its story.
